Which roads in Romania are tolled?

In Romania, the electronic vignette (Rovinieta) is mandatory for almost the entire national road network outside of city limits. This includes all motorways (A), expressways (DX), and national roads (DN). Unlike some other countries where only motorways are tolled, in Romania, you need a vignette as soon as you leave a city or town.

Primary Motorways (Autostrăzi)

Romania is actively expanding its motorway network. Major completed or partially completed sections include:

• A1 – Connecting Bucharest with Pitești, Sibiu, Deva, and the Hungarian border at Nadlac.
• A2 (Sun Motorway) – Connecting Bucharest with the Black Sea port of Constanța.
• A3 (Transylvania Motorway) – Connecting Bucharest with Ploiești, and sections in Transylvania.
• A10 – Connecting Sebeș with Turda.

Bridges with Additional Tolls

While the Rovinieta covers the use of the roads, some bridges over the Danube require a separate toll (Peaj):

• Fetești – Cernavodă (A2) – Often paid online or via SMS.
• Giurgiu – Ruse (Friendship Bridge) – Paid at the border crossing to Bulgaria.
• Calafat – Vidin (New Europe Bridge) – Paid at the border crossing to Bulgaria.

Exemptions

The following categories are typically exempt from the Rovinieta requirement:

• Motorcycles: Two-wheeled vehicles do not need a vignette in Romania.
• Urban Roads: Segments within the administrative limits of cities and towns.
