The Czech vignette is a mandatory road toll for drivers of vehicles weighing up to 3.5 tons who wish to use designated motorways and expressways in the Czech Republic. Since 2021, the vignette is available exclusively in digital form – traditional windshield stickers have been completely phased out. The electronic system has significantly simplified the process, eliminating the need to display a physical toll confirmation in the vehicle.
The vignette is required for passenger cars, camper vans, and utility vehicles with at least four wheels and a weight of up to 3.5 tons. Motorcycles and trailers are exempt – no additional fees are necessary. Vehicles exceeding 3.5 tons fall under a GPS-based toll system that charges per kilometer traveled instead of using time-based vignettes.
The Czech vignette can be purchased online – most easily through the official website edalnice.cz. Simply enter the vehicle details (license plate number and country of registration), choose the desired validity period, and complete the payment. A purchase confirmation is sent via email, but there's no need to print it or carry it in the car – inspections are carried out electronically using automated license plate scanning.
Vehicles registered in the Czech Republic with electric, hydrogen, or plug-in hybrid engines that emit no more than 50 g/km of CO₂ are also exempt from the vignette requirement. However, to benefit from this exemption, the vehicle must have special green license plates.
The Czech vignette system is simple, transparent, and convenient – especially for tourists or those transiting through the country. Full digitalization removes the risk of losing documents and eliminates the need to queue at gas stations or border crossings.
