Which roads in Slovenia are tolled?

In Slovenia, all motorways (A) and expressways (H) operated by the national motorway company DARS require a valid electronic vignette (e-vignette) for all vehicles with a maximum permissible weight of up to 3.5 tonnes. This includes passenger cars, motorcycles, and vans.

Main Toll Sections in Slovenia

The following motorways (Avtocesta) and expressways (Hitra cesta) are subject to tolling:

• A1 – Šentilj (Austrian border) – Maribor – Ljubljana – Koper
• A2 – Karawanks Tunnel (Austrian border) – Ljubljana – Obrežje (Croatian border)
• A3 – Divača – Fernetiči (Italian border)
• A4 – Maribor – Gruškovje (Croatian border)
• A5 – Maribor – Pince (Hungarian border)
• H3 – Ljubljana Northern Bypass
• H4 – Razdrto – Vrtojba (Italian border)
• H7 – Dolga vas (Hungarian border)

Special Toll Sections: Karawanks Tunnel

Please note that the Karawanks Tunnel (A2 motorway, on the border with Austria) has a special tolling regime. It is not included in the standard Slovenia e-vignette. All vehicles must pay an additional fee for each transit through the tunnel, regardless of whether they have a valid motorway vignette or not.

Free Roads in Slovenia

A vignette is not required for:

• National (regional) roads
• Local roads within towns and villages
• Selected short motorway sections where specifically indicated by signs

However, transit through Slovenia using only local roads is often time-consuming and difficult due to the mountainous terrain and lower speed limits.

How to avoid fines?

The Slovenian toll system is highly automated. Cameras placed along the motorway network scan license plates and cross-reference them with the electronic vignette database. To avoid a fine, ensure that your vignette is purchased and active before you enter any motorway or expressway.
