Which roads in Bulgaria are tolled?

In Bulgaria, most motorways and major national roads require a valid electronic vignette (e-vignette) for all motor vehicles (except motorcycles) with a maximum weight up to 3.5 tonnes. Unlike some other countries where only motorways are tolled, Bulgaria requires a vignette for many national roads as well.

Bulgaria Motorway Network

The Bulgarian motorway network connects the capital, Sofia, with the Black Sea coast and neighboring countries (Turkey, Greece, Serbia, and Romania). The primary motorways include:

• A1 Trakia Motorway – Sofia – Plovdiv – Burgas
• A2 Hemus Motorway – Sofia – Veliko Tarnovo – Varna (sections under construction)
• A3 Struma Motorway – Sofia – Blagoevgrad – Kulata (Greek border)
• A4 Maritsa Motorway – Chirpan – Haskovo – Kapitan Andreevo (Turkish border)
• A5 Cherno More Motorway – Varna – Burgas (sections under construction)
• A6 Europe Motorway – Sofia – Kalotina (Serbian border)

E-Vignette for National Roads

Please note that a vignette is also mandatory for most national roads (marked with one, two, or three digits). When driving outside of cities and towns, you should generally assume that a vignette is required unless explicitly stated otherwise.

How are the roads monitored?

Bulgaria uses an advanced electronic monitoring system consisting of hundreds of fixed cameras and mobile units. These cameras automatically recognize license plates and verify if a valid e-vignette is registered for the vehicle. The system operates 24/7 across the entire country.
