If the combined maximum permitted mass (MPM) of your towing vehicle and trailer exceeds 3.5 tonnes, the trailer usually needs its own Slovakia e-vignette. If the combined MPM is 3.5 tonnes or less, the towing vehicle's vignette is normally sufficient.
This rule applies to caravans, boat trailers, cargo trailers and other trailers used on Slovak motorways and expressways. Buy your Slovakia vignette before entering the first tolled road.
When does a trailer need its own vignette?
A separate trailer vignette is required when the combined maximum permitted mass of the towing vehicle and trailer exceeds 3.5 tonnes.
The calculation is based on the maximum permitted mass shown in the registration documents, not on the actual loaded weight during the journey.
- Combined MPM up to 3.5 tonnes — towing vehicle vignette only.
- Combined MPM over 3.5 tonnes — towing vehicle vignette plus trailer vignette.
- The towing vehicle still requires its own valid vignette.
Always check the registration documents before travelling rather than estimating the vehicle's actual weight.
Vehicle and trailer combinations
| Vehicle combination | Trailer vignette? |
|---|---|
| Car without trailer | No |
| Car + trailer (combined MPM up to 3.5 t) | No |
| Car + caravan (combined MPM over 3.5 t) | Yes |
| Van + trailer (combined MPM over 3.5 t) | Yes |
| Vehicle over 3.5 t | Check applicable toll rules |
Caravan and camper trailers
The same rule applies to caravans and camper trailers.
If the combined maximum permitted mass of the towing vehicle and caravan exceeds 3.5 tonnes, the caravan normally requires its own e-vignette.
Use the maximum permitted mass listed in the registration documents rather than the caravan's actual loaded weight.
How to buy a trailer vignette
If your trailer requires a vignette, purchase two separate products:
- One vignette for the towing vehicle.
- One vignette for the trailer.
Each vignette is linked to its own registration number, so enter both registration numbers carefully.
If you're buying for the first time, follow the guide to buying a Slovakia vignette.
Match the validity periods
It is usually easiest to give both the towing vehicle and trailer the same start date and validity period.
If your return date may change, consider choosing a longer validity for both to avoid one vignette expiring before the other.
Common mistakes
- Using the towing vehicle registration number for both purchases.
- Calculating actual vehicle weight instead of maximum permitted mass.
- Selecting different start dates for the vehicle and trailer.
- Forgetting that the trailer may require its own vignette.
- Entering the wrong registration number.
Transit through Slovakia with a trailer
The same rules apply even if you're only crossing Slovakia.
If your vehicle combination exceeds 3.5 tonnes and uses Slovak motorways or expressways, both the towing vehicle and trailer must have the required vignette before entering the first tolled section.
Check your route before travelling
Not every road in Slovakia requires a vignette.
If you're unsure whether your journey uses tolled roads, compare your route with the Slovakia toll roads map.
Driving with a rental or borrowed trailer
If you're using a rented or borrowed trailer, always check the registration number before buying the vignette.
The vignette is linked to the trailer itself, not to the driver or towing vehicle.
Planning your journey with a trailer
Before travelling, add together the maximum permitted mass of the towing vehicle and trailer. If the combined total exceeds 3.5 tonnes, you'll normally need both a vehicle vignette and a separate trailer vignette.
Check your route before departure and make sure both vignettes are valid before entering a tolled motorway. Driving without the required vignette may result in a penalty, explained in the guide to Slovakia vignette fines.
